This
1883/2 Shield nickel, graded MS-63 by ANACS, is an example of the Breen
2525 variety. Even without a loupe, you can clearly see that
something’s going on with the date, as the rest of the strike on the
obverse is very crisp. You can also clearly see the die crack which runs
through both the base of the shield and the 3 in the date. Contact
marks are in accordance with this piece’s MS-63 condition rating. The
reverse has great eye appeal, with relatively clear fields and device
surfaces. There’s just a whisper of beige, slightly mottled toning on
both sides of this otherwise bright-looking nickel. Overall, a very nice
example of this variety.

About Southgate Coins
Southgate Coins specializes in everything related to the Carson City
Mint. Owner Rusty Goe has assisted collectors in building some of the
finest sets of “CC” coins in history, and has placed some of the
scarcest and most celebrated pieces from that legendary institution with
his clients. Goe was the chief architect for the historic Battle Born collection
of Carson City coins, which sold for nearly $10 million in August 2012.
He contributed immensely to the Stack’s Bowers auction catalog for that
collection. It included the prestigious 1873-CC Without Arrows dime and quarter. Building sets of coins in any category of U.S. numismatics is his passion.
Our eBay presence exists to transfer online as many of the highlights
