Shield Nickel Design Hubs - Reverse Hubs
Reverse hubs are differentiated by checking the relative positions of the stars to the lettering. In the case of reverse hubs Ip and I, the rays between the stars are immediately recognizable.
Reverse Hub Ip
Used only for 1866 Proofs. Stars point to midpoint of A (STATES), to the space between AM (AMERICA), and to the left foot of R (AMERICA). The center dot is also diagnostic for this hub.
Reverse Hub I
Used only for 1866 and 1867. Rays between stars. Stars point to left foot of A (STATES), to the space between AM (AMERICA), and to the left foot of R (AMERICA).
Reverse I
Reverse Hub IIo
Used only for early no rays proofs of 1867. Also used for some pattern coins. Stars point to first T (STATES), first A (AMERICA), E (AMERICA). The large 5 in the center is noticeably different from the other hubs as well - the shape of the ball is different, and the top left corner of the flag of the 5 is sliced off. The two center dots are also diagnostic for this hub.
Reverse Hub IIa
Used in 1867 - 1870. Same star placement as hub I, without the rays. Stars point to left foot of A (STATES), to the space between AM (AMERICA), and to the left foot of R (AMERICA).
Reverse IIa
Reverse Hub IIb
Used only in 1868. Stars point to the midpoint of A (STATES), left foot of M (AMERICA), and to the midpoint of R (AMERICA).
Reverse IIb
Reverse Hub IIc
Used 1869 through 1883. Stars point to the left foot of A (STATES), left foot of M (AMERICA), and midpoint of R (AMERICA).
Reverse IIc
